Thor: The Dark World
"Thor: The Dark World" is a 2013 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor, directed by Alan Taylor and starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor. The film takes place after the events of "The Avengers" and follows Thor as he attempts to bring peace to the Nine Realms, which are still in chaos following the events of the first Thor film. Meanwhile, an ancient race of Dark Elves led by Malekith the Accursed, who seeks to return the universe to darkness, awakens from a long slumber and plans to use a powerful weapon known as the Aether to achieve their goal. As Malekith invades Asgard, Thor's home world, in search of the Aether, Thor turns to his mischievous brother Loki for help in stopping the Dark Elves. With the help of astrophysicist Jane Foster, who becomes infused with the Aether and is targeted by Malekith, Thor and Loki travel to Svartalfheim, the home world of the Dark Elves, to confront Malekith and prevent him from using the Aether to destroy the universe. In the climactic battle, Thor and Loki team up to defeat Malekith and destroy the Aether, but Loki appears to sacrifice himself in the process. Thor returns to Asgard with Jane and mourns the loss of his brother, but in a post-credits scene, it is revealed that Loki has survived and taken the place of Odin, the All-Father of Asgard. The film ends with Thor returning to Earth to be with Jane and promising to return to Asgard when his people need him, setting up future events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
